Jerez de la Frontera is an Andalusian city famous for its long-standing flamenco tradition. Here the young daughters, grand-children, nieces and nephews of greatly respected flamenco artists have formed Soniquete, a band that has an album out already and plays "a little pure flamenco from Jerez and a little flamenco that’s there in the street, the kind that people our age like." Soniquete started out as the idea of Carlos González Pantoja, who started up a workshop for the young talents of Jerez and who is their dedicated tutor and artistic manager. And it now turns out that the artists of Soniquete Dolores, Fernando, Manuel, Reyes, Manuela or Angela are going to be the ‘teachers’ of the new students who wish to perpetuate the spirit of the particular style of Jerez flamenco.
Mundi Romani presents Soniquete: their music, their spirit, their views on the future of flamenco, on their own future, on what it means for them to be Roma.
